Burma Earthquake 7.7: Geology, Geography, and Government

Cleo Appleton

2025-06-10

Recently, Burma was struck by a devastating earthquake, impacting a nation already torn by civil war, where the military junta fights ethnic armies, and civilian resistance groups linked to a democratically elected parliament that has never convened due to a military coup. This catastrophe represents a significant blow to a country already under immense strain, resulting not only in loss of life and immense human suffering but also in the destruction of many historical landmarks. This poses yet another threat to the country’s cultural heritage, which is closely tied to the national identity and collective memory of its people. In her lecture, Cleo Appleton, Senior Lecturer of the Burmese art at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, will explore the interconnections between Burma's geology, geography, and government, highlighting how these three elements play crucial roles in the nation's history, resource extraction, trading networks, and the distribution of wealth. She will also discuss the implications for the state of the country and its endangered cultural heritage.

Přednáška se uskuteční ve středu 11. června 2025 od 15:00 hod. v učebně Filozofické fakulty UK C247 v Celetné 20.

The lecture takes place on Wednesday 11 June 2025 at 3 p.m. in the room C427 at the Faculty of Arts in Celetná Street 20, Praha 1.
